J. ASHMORE, FREELANCE WRITER / EDITOR |
| As
publications manager at St. Olaf College and
before that as director of publications at
Carleton College (both located in Northfield,
Minn.), I oversaw the writing, editing, design
and production of hundreds of print and electronic
publications annually while managing budgets
totaling more than $200,000. My responsibilities
encompassed everything from student recruitment
materials and the college catalog to special
events communications and publications in support
of a $125 million campaign. |
| During my tenures
at these two nationally renowned liberal arts colleges, I served as
editor of their alumni magazines and edited a weekly campus print
and web newsletter for St. Olaf employees. I was also the St. Olaf
College “stylemaster,” the person designated to advise
campus writers on capitalization, punctuation and other style issues
connected with non-scholarly, mass-media publications and correspondence
written for and about St. Olaf College. |
| I began my career
in New York City where I served first as an editorial assistant for
a noted publisher of reference books and then as an editor at the
Consulate General of Japan. There I wrote and produced The Japan
Report, a biweekly, eight-page newsletter for Americans on Japanese
politics, economics, and culture, in addition to handling speech writing,
news analysis and research. |
| As a freelancer and
volunteer, I have crafted the public relations materials of a progressive
private school (K-5) and text for the web site of a startup e-business.
I’ve also edited a variety of books, including a history of
reproductive politics in Puerto Rico, a study guide on comparative
politics for Advanced Placement™ students, novels and a short
story anthology. |
